I have discovered why we have had so much trouble with our home alarm system, and why it is so user-unfriendly to set some options: the operator's manual is missing six pages. Normally one would notice this early on, but the pages are numbered and lettered (A4, B7 etc) so it was not obvious that there were gaps.
Have Googled for manufacturer, and found full manual as pdf on their web site. Hurrah! Been meaning to sort this since November 2003 but haven't had time :-(
