Well that's what I'd hoped for from Christmas in New Zealand, but it didn't quite happen that way.
It has been very cloudy and rainy here for the last few days, with occasional sunny spells. It started out nice and sunny here in Wairakei, and we got a glass of champagne with our breakfast (which was nice).
Simon had planned a weather-proof and bank-holiday-proof car tour for the day, doing a figure of eight round Lake Taupo and Tongariro National Park (home of Mount Ruapehu, a.k.a. "Mount Doom"!). The closer we got to Doom, the colder and wetter it got. The temperature dropped from a temperate 14dC when we set out, to a miserable 3dC on the mountain - and rain blattering the windscreen so we could hardly see out. Didn't stop us getting out for a quick caper, my precious! I know the way to Mount Doom - yessss! You takes State Highway 47, and hang a left up to Iwakai Village....
[better speed up - only 3 mins left on internet]
Ruapehu: wet but neat.
Lunch: cold and miserable pita bread in car park.
Tokaanu Thermal Park: free! Got to wander about steam-bubbling pools and reinstall sense of wonder!
Then a lovely half hour on beach then waterfalls argh no time left must post
