I've got the laundry done, I'm going to do some exercise video in living room thing (due to rain, and if Cat does not sit on my head), then I'm off to London. Am somewhat fretful that the chap I arranged to see Imax Watchmen with a month ago hasn't replied to any emails since. Might bring hipflask of strong liquor in case I get stood up. Expect sulky Twittering.

I won't make the Web and Mini Comix Thing, but my main reason for going was to see rstevens and my main reason for not going is I'm too shy to meet rstevens :-) Stupid Internet celebrity pixellated crushes!

I saw Bronson last night, with [livejournal.com profile] aardvark179, with 'Britain's most violent criminal' narrating his life as a circus ringmaster/cabaret MC act on stage, interspersed with scenes set in the prisons and asylums where he's spent 30 years. He gets into a lot of fights, with policemen, prison guards, often naked, often in 'war paint'. He has a great deal of self-control, then goes "fuckit", punches some guard in the head, and leaps into the ensuing affray with huge glee. My initial thought was that it was a good film, and that it made The Wrestler look like a feelgood Disney comedy. I suspect in a while I'll feel the same way about it as I do about Reservoir Dogs, that its wit and style don't atone for the behaviour it depicts. I'd be uncomfortable on a rewatch; once the novelty of the styling is gone, and it can't mislead me into being charmed, all I'll see in the foreground is this poor man, who on earth is he to make this of his life? I want to dismiss him with a "fucking psycho!" but he's not. All he wanted was to be famous, he said.

I'll keep thinking about this one for a while. Charm veiling power and danger, lion taming, confinement and release, control over self and others, acts physical and theatrical. Is his life some kind of performance art? Are many people real to him? The guards are all pretty faceless, uniform in their, um, uniforms, as are the white-clothed asylum staff who drift around the vast hall like interchangeable ghosts. His world is full of NPCs.

Ooh crikey, if he'd been born 20 years later he'd probably be in the Big Brother house. Now that's fucking scary. Charm, charm, charm - hostage situation.
