Books read (53-58)
Embroideries, Marjane Satrapi (2003) (Graphic novel)
Unseen Academicals, Terry Pratchett (2009)
I Kill Giants, Joe Kelly and JM Ken Niimura (2008-09) (Graphic novel)
Shades of Grey, Jasper Fforde (2010)
The Knife of Never Letting Go, Patrick Ness (2008)
Mirrormask, Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (2005) (Graphic novel)
Films watched (44-57) Why yes, there might have been a Film Festival in there
Toy Story 3
Tamara Drewe
Human Terrain
Transamerica
The Desert of Forbidden Art
The Happy Poet
Songs from the Second Floor
Les Enfants du Paradis
The Trip
Plug and Pray
Tridentfest
Harvest
Chico & Rita
Made in Dagenham
I Kill Giants was the best read (young girl whose fantasy life as a fearsome giant killer helps her deal with school bullies and Something Bad at home. Scritchy manga-style artwork. Nearly had me crying in the cafe where I finished it).
The Happy Poet was my fave from the Film Festival, naive chap tries to make a goer of a vegan food stand in a New York park, accretes characters.
I would watch Songs from the Second Floor again, and again, it's so mundanely quirky and there will always be some extra detail or expression on an amateur extra's face to spot.
Tridentfest was energetic and fun, short films (mostly horror) by staff at the Picturehouse. Now available online! Strange to see slightly familiar people on the big screen, then have them sell you a Coke.
The Trip is a film version of a Steve Coogan/Rob Brydon tv show to be screened in November. Steve plays a restaurant critic, they improvise madly throughout.
