I thought it was a superb example of the "come up with a novel technology and really thoroughly explore the social implications" category of sf. Brin does rather use it as a vehicle for his 'transparent society' ideas and (IMHO) the end goes wrong in a very similar way to how the end of Earth did, but all in all I was very impressed.
