Walking to the pub a while ago, I noticed a large "W", black and white, set into the ground in the circle at the end of Burleigh Street. "That's odd," I thought, "I don't remember there ever being a Waterstones around here.

On the way home, walking in the opposite direction, I saw that there was also a "N", "S" and indeed "E" laid out in tiles. Doh!

Just so you don't feel silly all alone, I spent ages trying to work out why they'd written "wesn" or an anagram of it in the road, upon reading that.

It helps when you see them laid out like the points of a compass. Should I have mentioned that? oops

Is this along the same lines as the "look right" warnings painted on the streets so tourists won't get run over by cars?
