Wishing I Was Lucky

The washing machine is letting water onto the floor.
The tumble dryer's door does not close properly, and blows hot air into the room.
These two effects do not cancel each other out in any meaningful way.

Subject = Wet Wet Wet, geddit?

Money's not a great problem - Simon hardly spent anything while he was away, so we have some saved up. I think the washing machine is 5-8 years old; an okay age for such things? The dryer might still be under warranty!

For major appliances, 5-8 years should not even be middle age. Our washing machine is starting to reach its end of life, but seeing that it's just over 30 years old and well-used I won't feel cheated when it goes.

I have repaired it, though. The repair was needed after a slight overfill caused water to run down the electrical harness connecting to the motor and thus shorting out the motor connector. Yay hooray for the GFCI (aka RCD) outlet which I'd installed, which tripped just as it should. And yes, when I rewired the washer, I ensured that any future leaks won't zorch anything.

I occasionally receive lottery tickets as gifts. I always have to read the fine print on the back so I know what to do with them. The scratch-and-win ones have the most bizarrely detailed yet pointless instructions, as presumably the lottery agent only needs to scan the barcode imprinted on the ticket for redemption of the prize.

The dryer is bodgeable but having opened up the washing machine I suspect it is beyond economic repair. No hoses seem to be split (which would have been a simple fix) but there is a lot of corrosion at the back of the drum, so I suspect a slow leak that has got a lot worse. Given the age of the machine and that it was not a particularly high-end brand (an Indesit) I am inclined to declare it a write-off and replace it. This time I think it will be worthwhile paying a bit more and getting a longer-lasting brand - looking at reviews, Miele seem to have a good reputation but I'll do a bit more research. In the mean time, off to the laundry tomorrow!
