I may have contaminated my goats' cheese experiment.

I had 30g of cheese a day for 5 days, felt mostly okay, a bit of aching.

Then I went to Redemption. On Friday I had some accidental butter in my sandwich. On Saturday morning I had some accidental butter on the breakfast mushrooms. And had an egg sandwich with known butter. Played four rounds of Twister - and won one! Had three "sod-it" chocolate hobnobs. For Sunday breakfast I had a "sod-it" pain au chocolat (but no mushrooms), and another egg sandwich with known butter.

There is aching, but I don't know the cause. I have another pack of goats' cheese with which to experiment this week, and a pack of goats butter (now I know it exists, it is very easy to find!)

So, the hypothesis is that it's cow's milk that is the problem, as opposed to all milk? That would certainly make your life simpler. Good luck, and do keep us posted. Hope Redemption was good. We missed you Saturday night.

I am testing that hypothesis! I suspect it might not be entirely true, but I have at least proved I can eat some goats cheese without feeling too bad.

We fell upon some goats cheese tortelloni at the supermarket, but found they were primarily filled with cows ricotta and only a small proportion of goat. So I'd be wary of ordering goats cheese X... in a restaurant.

I found Danish goat butter, which is probably easier to find on your side of the water. Also locally produced goat yogurt, which is very good tart yogurt, and doesn't bother me at all. It is not butter (from cows) that upsets my digestion though, but things like cream and fresh cheeses (mozzarella is right out) and the ubiquitous dry milk additive we get here in so many products. Some things you can substitute, and some things just aren't worth the bother, so I try to enjoy all the things that are left. Like most of Asian cuisines.

It's nice to think the sore-all-over bit of my condition might go away if I found the right combination of things to eat or not eat, but I know what you mean about sod-it sometimes. I had an actual piece of pizza for the first time in four or five years a couple months ago, removing most of the toasty cheese but not all of it, and I was very uncomfortable afterwards, but I got over it, and it was worth it. I can usually tell within about a half hour if the bad enzyme magic has been invoked, but after such a long time on the straight and narrow I generally have a better tolerance for small quantities of the forbidden. Doesn't keep me up all night. No, I do that on my own.
