Rugose and squamous

How do I clean this?

As you can see, I have a fur rug. Inherited and rather smelling of cat, with a few stains. Any idea how I might clean it? Stick it in the bath? The fur is quite brittle too.

[Alternatively, if anyone wants the rug for themselves they could come and take it away...]

I suspect it would require specialist cleaning if you wanted to keep and use it.

I'm more in the market for non-specialist cleaning. Otherwise it will go in the bin. If I break it through cleaning it can go in the bin somewhat cleaner :-)

I vote for "bin", then, because if it has actual skin/leather on one side it will be nigh impossible to clean yourself. If you put it in a washing machine and soak the leather, it will later dry out, crack, and crumble.

Machine wash on wool cycle with conditioner. If it doesn't look any beter after that, compost it.

Kill or cure, so to speak.
