So, where did you learn the meaning of "autodidact"?

I worked it out for myself, upon first seeing the word a few moments ago.

Damn.

I had to look at OED online.

Um - dictionary.com, I'm ashamed to say! Just now, in fact...

Appropriately, from a dictionary. I cannot remember exactly when.

Probably from reading Heinlein at an early age...

Worked it out from context... Like [livejournal.com profile] atropinesulfate, I was always saying "Oh, so that's how it's pronounced" when I was dead young.

Either from reading books (not dictionarties) or from look at the two latin components (or is it one latin one greek?).

All Greek according to the OED.

Which is what it was to me...

Where? Probably a dictionary. When? Later.

Probably worked it out from its context, but have no idea when. Many years ago, I expect.

Think someone (teacher?) told me that ancient greek plays were 'didactic' and once I knew what that meant, then adding 'auto' to the front...well I made an educated guess and I looked at the context it was used in.

We are told to read because it expands our vocabulary but just as important it gives us a clue about how to use the new words we learn.

Figured it out from context, while reading the observations of a self-described autodidact. Don't remember exactly when, but embarrassingly more recent than I'd like.

Oh, years ago ... er, many, many years ago, it seems. I've no idea where I learned it but I know I was reading about working-class intellectuals and self-taught types when I was in my late teens, so probably then.
