Way hey! Sicily, here I come. Strictly speaking it's not my holiday but N the lodger's - but she has a lot of work on and can't go. So I get to go to Sicily on Friday, and she gets to stay home with [livejournal.com profile] georgianafelis and the [livejournal.com profile] live_gerbils and ensure that they continue to not meet. And do lots of exciting stuff with tax.

I had very few plans for next week, and it's half term so my evening classes aren't running, so it's great timing. All of a sudden Thursday looks very busy, as I try to pack in everything I would otherwise have done over the weekend. And what shall I pack? Stout walking shoes for visiting ruins, books, far more notebook paper than anyone could feasibly fill in a month, but do I bring my lace-making to finish off or my cross-stitch? I plan to be disappointed by the lace as I am incredibly ham-fisted with it (pesky tiny bobbins keep unwinding), but maybe a bit more practice will help :-(

Must look on Babelfish for Italian versions of "I can't eat milk/cheese/cream/butter/... - Is this dish okay for me?" and "I apologise profoundly for my inexecrable pronunciation."

I suspect I am more an unwitting dupe who has had this holiday delegated to me!

PS I wish I'd got to go to Mexico.

Weeeeee!

(Take the cross-stitch. It's more manageable over a long distance)

That's an excellent reason, and is why I always end up taking the cross stitch. The lace is literally weeping tears of blood in its desparation to be finished. Might take both. Will check luggage. Then I can ration myself - a 2" loop of lace, then 6 strands of cross-stitch, repeat until projects completed or eyeballs fall out!

My only experience of lace making is watching Helen swearing loudly at it. She always took cross stitch on journeys.

Little cat!

Try: Non bevo il latte. Non mangio il burro o il formaggio. (http://www.ivu.org/phrases/westeuro.html)

Oh, neat! (Thanks - I'd assumed "il burro" was "donkey"!)

May I also recommend wordreference.com (http://it.wordreference.com/it/translation.asp?enit=butter&v=b) ... I use it all the time for French, and it's pretty good for a free online translation dictionary.

Have fun! Try to see Agrigento and Selinus if you can - they're the best of the archaeological sites. I look forward to seeing pictures.
