The Patter of Tiny Feet

Yes, we're getting another rodent! I collect him on Wednesday. Brownie is a rescue hamster that I saw in The Blue Cross's weekly feature in the local paper. He had been neglected, and is the only hamster in a facility full of cats. He is 18 months old (typical lifespan is 2-3 years), nervous of being handled, and he squeaks and squeals. I often wondered what sort of person would adopt a pet based on these local paper ads. It turns out that it's me.

You old softy.

I always get the wrong image from the phrase "rescue [animal]". In the case of your hamster I wonder how long it takes him to dig a human out of the snow, and how he gets around with that big barrel of brandy round his neck.

"I often wondered what sort of person would adopt a pet based on these local paper ads.", so have I. I'm very fond of the little descriptions they give for the animals.
"Tabby would be suitable for homing with older children"
="Tabby likely to scratch the eyes out of any 4 year old silly enough to try and pet her."
"Tabby needs a home with freedom to roam"
="You will see Tabby twice a week for ten minutes when she brings a dead bird into your house and meoows until you give her food."
I'm glad the hamster has found a loving new home though.

"Tabby would be suitable for homing with older children"

According to the last two anecdotes I heard (including one from a couple who were leaving their cat with the Home), this is code for "We had a baby and Tabby keeps sitting on its face when it's in the crib".

"Brownie The Rescue Hamster"(!) He could have his own comic book :-)
Could he diversify and become an "International Rescue Hamster"?
Or would he fight with The Mole...
...I'll get my coat ;-)

International Hamster of Mystery, baby, yeah!

He's off to a flying start with the cheesy fur coat and protruding yellow teeth.
