I measured my walk to work today, it's 3.75 miles each way and jolly nice except that my shins have started cramping (only on the downhills, they perk up again when I go uphill - yes, uphill in Cambridge - Castle Street and the long slog up Newmarket Road). My shoes are worn down at heel already, and they're only three weeks old; they're probably not designed for this treatment.

People sometimes ask why I don't get bespoke shoes, and I've usually replied "Hah, yeah, when I get a job I'll look into it."
I have a job. I looked into it. £1500/pair looks common. Comfort aside, would they really outlast 30 pairs of my usual shoes?

If you're walking that far every day, I would strongly suggest (if you don't already have some) investing in a decent pair of proper walking boots for the journey to and from work; leave a pair of shoes at work to change into.

I've hoofed it around in Army surplus for years - they last.

I used to do well from DMs, I'll try Army Surplus (I think there's one in Cambridge). I think what I want is a cut-and-shunt job between a men's 6.5 for the toe and a ladies' 5.5 for the heel and the length :-)

One reason I switched to them is that DMs never lasted all that long - I get about twice as long out of a pair of Army Surplus. And they have names in the back - dead men's shoes!

[One hopes actually they are shoes from men who joined the Army and had an attack of common sense or something and decided not to after all.]

walking boots = NEW ROCKS!!!?

I do have a pair of decent shoes at work for when I wore my trainers to walk in; that worked okay.
