I realise this may have been tried, but have you tried VLC?

Failing that, persuade [livejournal.com profile] ceb that when I move I want to have another lousy movies all-nighter.

The only subtlety is the Video->Deinterlace option, which you will want if you get hideous deinterlacing artifacts.
