Knowing shit from shinola

Today I discovered that Shinola is not, as I had assumed, a type of granola.

Er, no. Definitely not a kind of granola. Predates granola by quite a few decades. Also, not good to eat.

I actually keep a bottle of Shinola in the bathroom. You know, as a reference. In case you were not sure what was what.

A bottle? Sounds like some modern Heresy, to me -- _true_ Shinola is a hard-paste shoe/boot wax that comes in thin round tins ... or used to, back in the days when shoes were made of leather that people were expected to keep new & shiny looking. (I stopped using it somewhere around 1960.)

Not modern, but not canonical Shinola Paste. It's a bottle of Shinola suede restorer from the 40s. Black fluid with a soft applicator, for touching up skuffs on non-shiny shoes.

I always thought it was a floor wax (but I was fairly sure it wouldn't make a good dessert topping)
