Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] pseudomonas came round for cuppa tea and dinner and Scrabble. I'd told him how pleased I was, a what a good cat [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat was, that we could go away for a week and come back to the house in a good state with no unfortunate accidents.

This morning, after nicely feeding the cat and giving him a bit of fuss, and letting him out for his morning constitutional, I came downstairs to find a giant symbolic poo in the middle of the living room. It was easy to clean up, him being a dry food cat, and on a rug so I've taken the rug into a different room pending advice on magic smelly things I could do to encourage him to not do it again.

[And now my back hurts]

Thoughts? His litter box had one thing in it, he had clear access to it. He didn't come to complain at me in the night. The [livejournal.com profile] live_gerbil's came back in the afternoon and he watched them a bit before he started watching them too boisterously and I shut the door. He was fairly sociable, and came and Sat At Me from about 10om to say "Where is [livejournal.com profile] tamaranth and why is she not in bed yet?".

He's currently outside, eyes locked in deadly contest with a neighbouring cat who's sitting on our fence.

*sigh*

It may not be a protest -- he may have had mild constipation (big, hard turd). If cats experience pain on defecation or urination, they associate it with the place they're squatting in, and so go somewhere else. It's the right time of year for cats to begin shedding, and if he swallows too much fur that can also contribute to difficult bowel movements -- if the turds are pointy or appear to be helf together with fibre, that's a warning sign.

Upshot -- it's probably a one-off, but if it recurs, consider a vet visit (to check for problems). Alternatively, try giving him a little bit of wet food in his diet, or katalax or similar dietary lubricant (for fur balls).

What Charlie said. Most cats do this through discomfort.

I've given him lots of fussing, and a few bits of turkey ham (which I think surprised him!). Hope it helps.

Sounds like good advice.

Maybe he was hinting in his subtle feline way that, while it's nice to have your company again, the living room belongs to him.

Oh dear! Sorry ... it could well be constipation tbh. But at least only once.

It's generally either as autopope says or anxiety.
