Books Read January

Farewell, Nikola!, Guy Boothby (1901)
Beloved, Toni Morrison (1987)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith (2009)
Babel 17, Samuel R. Delany (1966)
My Lady Tongue and other stories, Lucy Sussex (1983-90)
Enchanted Glass, Diana Wynne Jones (2010)
The Mile-Long Spaceship, Kate Wilhelm (1956-63)
Gullstruck Island, Frances Hardinge (2009)
Contemporary British Women Artists in their own words, Rebecca Fortnum (2007)
Pride and Promiscuity: The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen, Arielle Eckstut (2001)

Top picks are the Sussex and Hardinge, writing that almost has a flavour. Beloved is powerful and disturbing, the Delany and Wilhelm are good classic SF, and the Pride and P$ books were good for a giggle.

As a teenager I'd almost given up on SF until I picked up Babel 17.

Go on then: Dhalgren. I dare you! With a quick follow up of Stars In My Pocket...

Ditto: as a teenager I'd almost given up on SF until I picked up The Einstein Intersection. And it's remained my absolute favourite SF novel ever since.

Yes, proper stuff. I'd been happy with Star Trek and Who novelisations till the university SF club pointed me at other stuff.

Me too January: Enchanted Glass.

Me too otherwise: Beloved, Babel 17, My Lady Tongue and Other Stories.

I re-read the Einstein Intersection last year with great pleasure. I'm eyeing Stars in My Pockets Like Grains of Sand...

I want to read Gullstruck Island and The Mile-long Spaceship sometime.

Just finished Triton this morning. Sadly, my copy of Babel 17 vanished somewhere in the extended chaos of my move from Hull [mumble] years ago, one of these days I'll get round to buying a new copy.

Actually, having just checked on the evil book empire site, it seems that it's imminently due for republishing in the SF masterworks series, so I'll even be able to send a royalty payment in Delany's direction.
