Earlier today I forgot how to do fractions, in my befuddled back achy state.

But this morning, I got a theremin! An actual theremin, made of thereminions or whatever! From eBay! I attached the two antennae, plugged in the power cable, switched it on and - nothing. Waaaaaaaaah! I switched it off and on a few more times and still nothing. I was distraught, and shared this misery with [livejournal.com profile] tamaranth. She also switched it off and on to no avail, then asked "You see this socket on the front marked 'AUDIO OUT'? Do you suppose it needs an amp or something?"

Doh! Am a twit, but one very grateful for finding this out before she emailed the eBay seller in a panic.

I can play it now, but with headphones (I have no amp) so it looks very silly to an observer.

Oh wow, a theramin, is it as much fun as I imagine?

(I am imagining quite a lot of fun but in a limited way.)

Will playing it keep you in shape more than a Wii Fit?

It is fun, but it probably sounds better to me than it does to other people at the moment - like when you are driving a car you find cornering and speed bumps a lot more tolerable than your passengers do :-)

Do you think perhaps the_magician has a spare amp somewhere in a storage locker near Cambridge?

I want to play too

You could always play air theremin in front of the mirror...

Wouldn't that cross the streams?

Can you play it with a hamster?

Or powered computer speakers have a mini amp built in. I have a few spare, and probably others do too.

Yeah, any speakers designed for PCs or MP3 players should work nicely, as long as they are powered.

Yep, they do indeed work nicely! The cat is not impressed.

Have fun with the Theremin. I wonder what happens if You extend a metal slinky in it's vicinity and make sine waves travel along it...

I only have a plastic slinky. But if I put the theremin antenna in the gerbil tank, it makes "oooEEEEEoooo" noises when they snuffle at it :-)
