I've taken gas and electricity readings every month this year. From June we've been using 20-25 units of gas a month; I switched on the heating on Oct 15th and we're up to 56 units already. It hit 175 last January. Electricity stays fairly constant through the year at 250/month.

We have a winter gas peak and a summer electricity peak, caused by heating and cooling respectively. This year's gas bill was huge for winter, mostly because it rained and got colder (bloody humidity!) It's amazing how much you go through, but then again I'm home 3 days per week so that probably helps too.

I expect our gas use to have gone up severely this month for the same reason. It may not be as cold as it was last year, but it is damp.

I've yet to see how bad the new house is. I gave the suppliers a meter reading last week (because I'm submitting them monthly), and at the moment my monthly payments seem to have put me massively in credit. Waiting 'till the winter is over before I decide whether I am paying too much or not. I am currently paying significantly less to heat & power a detached house than I was to heat and power a 2 bed flat with storage heaters on economy 7.

Our usage so far this year:

Jan (from 15th): 84
Feb: 142
Mar: 49
Apr: 16
May: 13
Jun: 5
Jul: 4
Aug: 4
Sep: 8
Oct: 34

Looking at the previous period (4th Nov to 15th Jan) we almost certainly used another 50+ units in January (it would have been 53 if we'd used the same amount of gas every day in that period).

So far we've got the heating coming on automatically for just over an hour in the morning, and we're often turning it on manually for a couple of hours in the evening or a bit longer if we're in during the day. I'm hoping we can use a bit less this winter than in the cold of last winter, but it does depend a lot on how cold it gets!

I don't have records for every month last year, but according to the energy tracker on our gas/leccy company's webpage we were up quite considerably on gas usage early in the year compared to the previous year. We've managed to rein it back to 1.8% less than last year overall now, but we'll have to see how it comes out at the end of the year.

I fear our new boiler actually ends up using *more* gas, not less than the old one did.
