Valentine's Day Post

I got a shiny silver card through the letterbox this morning! From the Post Office!

Dear Mrs Bugshaw, Unfortunately we can't deliver your item because there's a fee to pay.

[x] The sender didn't pay full postage.

Payment due: £1.12

Includes £1 handling fee for underpaid items.

£1 handling fee for 12p underpaid postage, WTF? It might only be 6p underpaid postage, the algorithm used to be "double the underpayment and add the handling fee".

Bah.

Has anyone posted me anything important?

Yeah, they hit on the recipient, not the guilty party.

It's the same with import consignments. If you order something worth more than £16 over the net from outside the EU, it may get stopped and checked for duty and VAT. In which case they'll add a whopping £10 handling charge, even if it's two mugs from CafePress (VAT and duty due: about £1.20).

That annoys me too: paying a £4 handling fee on a £1.50 customs charge is a bit excessive, even when I was expecting to get smacked by customs.
