When I just want to cook something new, and don't have any clear idea, I'll try a theme book or two, until I find something that looks interesting. If I have an idea, I'll try the reference book, but I'll probably fiddle with the recipe a bit; I managed to revolutionise a family cake recipe recently, by upping the spice and lowering the baking time a trifle. And sometimes these processes cross-breed.
