Tortoises have such stern faces. They never smile, or do they? Looks like they have a very serious life, eating all those greens.

I've never seen Speedy smile but I think he'd growl if he could. I'm looking after him while his owners look in to tortoise-proofing their new garden.

Very, um, tortoisey!

Tortoises make us laugh after an experience we had at the local zoo. They have several Giants there. One day as we approached the Herpetarium we heard a weird grinding noise. Sure enough, a couple of the big tortoises were, um, getting frisky. We were standing near a family when one of the kids piped up, "What are they doing, mommy?" Whereupon all the unattached adults beat a hasty retreat into the building, leaving mom to hem and haw her way through an explanation!

Ummm... I'm afraid I don't see any dandelions here -- the leaf it's eating isn't the least bit dentate -- but it's still a fine photo of a most admirable tortoise.
