IT support thanks you for saving 20 minutes of their time, and so do I.

Glad to be of service!

In all fairness, I didn't know if it was a general 'thing' or a special set-up for us. When we first got laptops a big fuss was made about keeping the lids shut when docking in order to save energy ('you don't want 2 screens on and if you open the lid you'll have to keep it open' - presumably we couldn't be told about the 'switch screen' button!) Still, someone should have explained the basics when you were given the equipment. People aren't born with an innate ability to operate docking stations!

"You don't want two screens on"!?!? My docking station is connected to two external screens, and I wouldn't mind if it would work with the laptop open so I could have three. Multiple monitors are great.

Very few people at (my) work would know what to do with multiple monitors, so having 2 screens on would be unnecessary duplication and a waste of energy. And we were all about saving energy when the laptops were rolled out - part of the justification for them was lower energy usage than desktops.
