Simon pointed me at this astonishing tale of hamster escape in The Guardian. The scrapped ovens go along the conveyor belt, towards the rotating knives...

This was my favourite:

a hamster exercise ball... a hamster called Roly was found pedalling his along the hard shoulder of the M6 in Birmingham after falling from a car.

I saw a clip of that on a "Britain's Worst Drivers" programme or something similar. The hamster was not the worst driver on the road!

Every time I go to Cute Overload I stay for an hour. Must be strong...

Ah yes, I think this happened a few years ago when I was living in Cheltenham. He is a very handsome fellow, though.

The Grauniad's style department shames itself again. If you're going to be cute and use the scientific name for an animal species, italicize it. It's not just a good idea, it's the law as far as scientists are concerned.

The best part of the article was the illustration that the Grauniad's graphic designers had knocked up to show the stages of processing that the hamster went through - if you've not seen it, I'll try and get a photo of it online...
