I have a bunch of vimeo stuff to watch. Shiny iMac was giving me bursts of 3 seconds then pausing for more like 10 seconds. I tried cheap Windows laptop and it streamed fine, though the picture and sound were a bit crappy. Both machines are in the same room as the router, running wifi, and both are less than 4 months old. Speedtest shows 0.9 Mbps on iMac and 6 Mbps on cheap Windows laptop. Any suggestions?

Apparently the solution is "bitch about it on LiveJournal", after a few minutes iMac perked up again after a couple of days in a Mbps slump.

Cable connections are your friend. Wifi can be flaky with streaming video, but your imac pribably has a 1gb network port, ditto the router, and I assume you don't move it around so often a wired connection would be a problem.

Doh, I will try that on Sunday, should have plenty of cables around.

Rome Girl is a huge fan of Apple products, but every Apple computer she's ever had has gotten slower Internet speeds than the cheap PCs I use.

in my case, switching to a router that could use the 5GHz band did the trick.
