I've a feeling one could happily live off the available food on Coldhams common--without, even, harvesting the fruit that is too near the main roads to be desirable. (It'd be even better if I knew how to skin rabbits, of course.)

As to its safety, I've not heard anything bad about it and I've been walking across it alone, night and day, for the last 15 years with nothing more untoward than away fans asking for recommendations for places to eat (Preston supporters at that, who very kindly invited me to come along, and with accents like that it was very hard to refuse them). It is one of the reasons I tolerate Cambridge at all, that and Stourbridge Common.

"Officially" blackberry picking season has ended: some state Michaelmas as the final date for picking, but I've always gone with the last day of September. Not that that stops me, even though I had the folkloric reason spelled out to me: all the explanations I've ever heard or read failed to mention that the Devil's revenge on the blackberry bush was to piss on it. (The speech recognition software's gone all coy on me too and won't pee for me :-(
