Cambridge Music Festival is happening this November, and has as its theme Mozart, Maths and Music. As well as concerts, there are a couple of talks I'd be interested in seeing. Admission is by free ticket, and they always sell out. Anyone else interested in coming, before I go get tickets? Both are 5-6pm, Centre of Mathematical Sciences, Clarkson Road.

Thur 16 Nov: Yea, Why Try Her Raw Wet Hat?
What does it mean to say that Maths and Music go together? This illustrated lecture features music from Tallis and Back to Bartók and Hindemith, and answers such questions as Why are pianos always out of tune? Can music have a 'geometry'? What is the meaning of the title of this talk?

Tues 21 Nov: Dancing with Maths
Why should mathematicians be interested in Folk Dancing? With the accompaniment of live folk music, this lecture will explore the mathematical significance of traditional dance forms, and may even get the audience on its feet!

The maths of folk dance sounds almost irresistible. If it wasn't on a Tuesday, I'd be with you, but I think I'll have a pupil then and as she's coming back after a longish break, it'll break the continuity too much if I miss her then.

Bugger.

You were pondering coming down here this weekend... We could probably squeeze another sleeping bag in. It'll be fun and the company would be good for you.

Thanks, but I'm socialising 4 nights out of 5 this week and I must get some serious work done. I've been reminded of another responsibility which needs completing Before Novacon.

Also have just been to dentist and am on two-week regime of carefulness and hot salt mouthwashes. I pulled my stitches already today, laughing. Bah!

I will try to write up the talk!

"Does it hurt?"
"Only when I laugh."

I was going to suggest going and seeing The History Boys, but if you're already socialised up to the eye balls then I guess I won't.

It would be good to get out for some time at the weekend, maybe Sunday afternoon (unless my jaw drops off amusingly). You do know about the Rodin at Kettle's Yard exhibition?

I didn't and thankyou for pointing it out.

Sunday afternoon sounds good as long as I can get back home for the start Grand Prix around six.

Vue at 12:20 or 14:50?
Running time is 109 mins, I don't know how long the preceding trailers are, but the third showing is at 17:20 so I presume the 14:50 would be finished by then.

Or there's a 1:15 showing at the Arts. I don't mind which.

My jaw sends its regards to your jaw for a speedy recovery.

I will try to write up the talk!

Please do! It sounds fascinating.

The whole program sounds brilliant. I look forward to your report. Its at times like this with winter drawing in and my town returning to its sleepy normal status after the summer madness that I miss England the most. I wish I was still living in London and could grab a train and come up and go with you.
