Filling a popular cultural hole

I'm going to watch Alien: Resurrection on telly tonight. I didn't catch it at the cinema, and after the reviews I haven't wanted to spend money on it, but it should keep me occupied whilst ironing/cross-stitching/soldering. Or will I decide I'm better off with an early night?

Alien: Resurrection is indeed a cultural hole. But I wouldn't agree that it's a popular one.

But it's freeee - it'll just be there, magically on the telly (she says, plaintively)

It does have a couple of nice moments in it. Unfortunately these are more than cancelled out by Winona Ryder doing a decent impression of a lobotomised Keanu Reeves.

Mind you, this is the bitterness speaking: I paid good money to see it in the cinema.

I saw AR at the cinema and thought it interesting, patchily good, with some ideas worth developing. BUT it is clumsily made in many ways, ideas are not really explored properly and some of the acting is a bit banal.

On the other hand, it does have Dominique Pinon and Ron Perlman, and I find they always make a good double-bill of whatever film they're in.

I am enjoying Ron Perlman (though he hasn't had much to do so far). There is more gore than I feel necessary, and it veers from scary to silly a bit much. I could have done without the fast-freeze guard whose body parts snapped off...

Ripley is turning out nicely insane.

Okay -
Ron gets a nice "Die, motherfucker!" moment
Alien Queen in labour is very silly
and I can't watch the new hybrid alien waddling around without thinking "Are you my Mummy?" thank you very much, new Doctor Who.

Someone on the production team does like their penetrative brain wounds. There are other ways to die, folks!

Oh, thank you dear. You've broken my head again...

I'm just keeping it in practice. Wouldn't want it to get all weak without me, would you?
