Here's a collection of photos I took today at the beach I go to. It's not normally so dressed up, but at the moment they are having the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition, so it's a lot more popular during weekdays than usual. The swimmers get it back after next weekend. I took these photos around five o'clock this afternoon.

And some more detail is available on that bunker ad, I mean exhibit....

Do cats love us back?

A young woman serendipitously adopted a kitten only a few months before she had to leave on a long trip abroad. The cat was well cared for by her family while she was away, but as her return date drew near, the traveler wondered whether the cat would love her, remember her, and recall their transatlantic bond. She certainly did.

Cat lovers on the internet provided comfort, sharing the true nature of the sassy cats with whom we share our lives.

Finally, this imprisoned cat has found freedom.

Generally, cats are creatures that don't need much. They need food, they need water, they need someone to change their litter every once in a while, and a little love to be given to them every once in a while, when they need it. Cats like their homes, they like their space, and they don't like leaving. But even cats have a limit. And confining a cat to a single bathroom for ten years is a level of horrible treatment that we have not quite heard of yet.

Cats may not need too much, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve the extras. Cats should be spoiled. That is our job as their humans. To make sure that they are as happy as they can pawssibly be in our homes. That might mean giving our cats boxes to sit in and spreading a bunch of them all throughout the house. It might mean wrapping our cats in blankets and tucking them into our beds, giving them peak comfort at all times. These little things matter, and this poor kitty got none of them. For ten whole years. But that is all over now. Finally, she is in the right hands, living the life that she truly deserves.

Someone tries to remote control his own DJI Romo vacuum, and ends up controlling 7,000 of them from all around the world.

The IoT is horribly insecure, but we already knew that.

90 discussion questions. 1. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

There are so many places! If I'm imagining myself being as physically limited as I am now - whereby I find walking difficult for more than about half an hour at best - then a cruise might be best.

I would like to cruise up the Danube and see the painted churches of Romania. But then again I would also like to cruise down the Nile and see Luxor. I could take a few lessons with Egyptian Raqs Sharqi teachers and get a new outfit while I was there.

If, on this imaginary trip, I'm also imagining myself as physically fit again, I'd like to go to Mexico and see what remains of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. Or perhaps to Peru to visit Machu Picchu

Alternatively, my son would like to go to Japan, so perhaps I would use my imaginary trip to take him there.

Despite his parents not allowing cats inside, he's feeding her and taking care of her anyway.

It can be so adorable to see someone taking care of a cat. This teenager says the cat hangs around his place, she waits until he opens the door so she can zoom inside and get some milk. His parents are superstitious about cats, so they don't allow them. But he's been taking care of her anyway! He hopes that something will come out of it, that he'll be able to actually be with her and have her as his own. But you'll have to read the full story below to find out what happens in the end.

What I've Read

After the Storm by perennial - This beautiful fic is Don John and Hero from Much Ado About Nothing, in an alternate universe where John revenges himself on Claudio by marrying Hero. Long and slow, this fic look at who John might be if given enough rope, and who Hero might be if she didn't have to marry that credulous shithead.

Swordheart by T. Kingfisher A sweet romance, a little too long. Doing some lifting to set up the following books in the series.

The Grief of Stones by Katherine Addison - A reread for me for xing bookclub!

What I'm Reading Now
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - This is fine? Not sure if I am reaching for the orientalism or if the book is just doing that, but the key problems are repetition and repetition. 700 pages of, Dracula is around still and he's a dick.

Wake betimes and talk a while with my wife about a wench that she has hired yesterday, which I would have enquired of before she comes, she having lived in great families, and so up and to my office, where all the morning, and at noon home to dinner. After dinner by water to Redriffe, my wife and Ashwell with me, and so walked and left them at Halfway house; I to Deptford, where up and down the store-houses, and on board two or three ships now getting ready to go to sea, and so back, and find my wife walking in the way. So home again, merry with our Ashwell, who is a merry jade, and so awhile to my office, and then home to supper, and to bed. This day my tryangle, which was put in tune yesterday, did please me very well, Ashwell playing upon it pretty well.

Earth's changing climate is harming crop diversity exactly where the security of global food production needs it most

A new study warns that if global warming surpasses 1.5°C, vast regions could lose critical crop diversity, heightening the risk to worldwide food security.

Researchers predict that about one-third of global food production may be in jeopardy due to higher temperatures, underscoring how climate change is expected to reshape agriculture, especially in vulnerable low-latitude countries.

You know what? I think they're barking up the wrong tree here. Humans have done FAR more damage to the foodstream than climate change has so far. I'm sure climate change will get around to that, but it's late to the party. Humans have already discarded many traditional crops because they don't lend themselves to commercial growing, drastically limiting the typical diet.

Cat memes may not be a purroven cure for bad days, but for cat lovers whose heart rate spikes with glee when they see a cat and whose cheeks hurt from smiling when they're around their favorite feline, it's worth a try.

Because behind the reserved, graceful facade of every cat, whether on the street or in a hoomans home, lies a loving little beast just waiting to be cherished, played with, and loved beyond measure.
