My partner was out for a walk given the unusually warm weather we've been having. He texted me excitedly that he thought the swan might be back. (Some of you may remember we got a weeklong visit from one last year).

Then as he came closer he realized the swan seemed unmoving and stiff...

Today is mostly sunny and quite warm. It's already 78°F outside. 0_o

I fed the birds. I've only seen a few sparrows and house finches, but lots of birds are singing all around the yard. I suspect they're more interested in foraging.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I sowed 3 troughs with 'Sugar Ann' snap peas and 3 with 'Avalanche' snow peas. I put 2 peas in each end of a trough, leaving the middle open to plant other things. That makes 24 pea plants. These are bush types and did well last year.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I sowed one trough with 'Lovely Lettuce Mesclun Blend' and one with 'Thumbelina Baby Ball' carrots. I plan to sow more of those 2 weeks later.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I trimmed a few spray bits of brush in the parking lot, and followed up with weed spray. My partner Doug is trying to find someone to come install a load of gravel.

A large flock of several dozen blackbirds has gathered high in the trees.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I watered the six troughs on the benches of the new picnic table garden.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I used the last partial bag of compost & manure to spread a little over the eight big pots atop the new picnic table garden. So I'm out of that and nearly out of the American Countryside potting mix.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I put topsoil in four of the big pots atop the new picnic table. They're not completely full yet; there's room to add a bit of potting soil.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I put topsoil in the other four of the big pots. I still have a partial bag left.

I am done for the night.

Second paragraph of third section:

Sergeant Colon balanced on a shaky ladder at one end of the Brass Bridge, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. He clung by one hand to the tall pole with the box on top of it, and with the other he held up a home-made picture book to the slot in the front of the box.

I have very happy memories of first reading this while bouncing around the hills and valleys of North Macedonia in 2001 during the conflict there, which actually made it rather appropriate reading; I wrote then:

it is the story of a multiethnic diplomatic mission to a neighbouring, less developed country from the urban metropolis of Ankh-Morpork. As I met up with my Bulgarian, Romanian and American colleagues in Sofia, then proceeded to Skopje to rendezvous with our Greek, Turkish, Serb, Kosovar and Albanian comrades, before touring [North] Macedonia to find out what the hell was going on there, Pratchett’s satire took on a very hard edge for me. My Albanian colleague devoured the book on the day we travelled to Ohrid, though he confessed to some very understandable confusion about exactly who was a dwarf and who was not. Pratchett manages to give a gravely humorous treatment to some very serious themes.

I’m glad to say that I found it just as entertaining coming back to it a quarter-century later. Some of the puns are groan-worthy; some of the satire lands a bit better than other bits; but the core values of empathy and humanism (very much extending to the inhuman characters) are consistent, and there are some deep ideas about symbolism, community and identity. (Though there’s also a less successful sub-plot about the Watch falling to pieces in Ankh-Morpork while Vimes, Carrot and Angua are away in Uberwald.) Sure, these books are a formula; but it’s a good formula that can cope with varying the ingredients. You can get The Fifth Elephant here.

class="wp-block-more-from-category">

It’s been seven years since the first Ready or Not, which effectively feels like saying that the film was made on an entirely different planet to its successor. Despite this, Ready or Not 2 begins in the final moments of the first film, with Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving) smoking a cigarette on the steps of the flaming Le Domas manor, having just survived the worst night of her life.

That night, for those unaware or unremembering, was her wedding night. She learned that her husband’s family—boardgame tycoons—required every joining member of the brood to pull a card from a special puzzle box and play the game written on it. These terms were dictated to the family by one “Mr. Le Bail,” a man who once made a deal with their ancestor to make them wealthy and powerful in exchange for certain traditions, including cute group activities like goat sacrifice, and the understanding that when someone pulls the card “Hide and Seek,” the whole family must hunt that person to the death, or they will all die by sunrise.

Grace survived, in case you’re wondering how that played out.

Now it looks like she’s about to be brought up on criminal charges—given the fact that the family is exploded, their house is on fire, and her ripped up wedding dress is covered in their blood—until a contingency is activated. Grace’s survival has dictated that all the “ruling families” who made similar pacts with Mr. Le Bail are now required to play a second game, this one dictating who gets to keep the high council seat and, essentially, rule the world. The family with that seat used to be the Danforths, and their head of house (played by David Cronenberg, who is having something of an acting renaissance in old age that I cannot get enough of) has his children commit patricide so that they can both, being twins, take his place in the game.

Grace is determined to sit this one out, but there’s a teensy flaw in this plan: She still had her baby sister listed as her emergency contact. Faith MacCaulley (Kathryn Newton) is now involved in the game in order to force Grace’s participation, with the Danforth resort as the playing field. The rules are deliberately byzantine and laid out by “the Lawyer” (Elijah Wood), who also keeps each of the four ruling families in check while they watch their selected heads of houses go after the sisters on screens from a safe room.

Grace winds up suiting up in her old gear—chucks and a torn up wedding dress becoming a sort of ceremonial garb, though you couldn’t pay me to tug something with lace and that much dried blood back onto my body—for the sake of movement. She’s gained a very different sort of toughness from the first ordeal, one that Faith never questions, even if she is angry with her sister for leaving her behind.

There are a few gripes to be had here, and most of them come down to flagrant retooling of the original conceit. It doesn’t make much sense for Grace to have a sister; her whole purpose in joining the Le Domas family was down to growing up in the foster system and desperately wishing that she had a family of her own. An elaborate falling out between Grace and Faith is wedged into the plot, but it still does weaken one of the core aspects of the initial movie (and can’t cover up the fact that Faith was never so much as mentioned there). This is a full retcon on the creative team’s part, by the way: Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had planned an entirely different project where Weaving and Newton were sisters, but on being asked to create a Ready or Not sequel, they decided to smash those stories together. The duo make a great team and their relationship is sweet, but it’s hard not to feel aggravated when the previous film is set up so well.

Another retcon is learning that Grace wasn’t Alex Le Domas’ first fiancée—that was Francesca (Maia Jae), a member of the El Caido ruling house, who is now determined to destroy Grace for “stealing her man.” While they wind up having the funniest fight of the film’s run, her entire character is framed around this rote catfighting trope. There was an opportunity in her introduction to give some context to the previous film, but no interest in using the character beyond catty one-liners and comical rage.

It’s really too bad, because it might have helped alleviate some of the disconnect between the two films by bringing the Le Domas clan’s history to the fore. Why did Alex consider marrying Francesca? Was this part of a bid to consolidate house power that he decided against? Was he strong-armed into the match by his family, and is that part of the reason he ran away from them for a few years? What strange games do the other families have to play for the delight of Mr. Le Bail? What does running the world even mean in this context and how does it work?

A great deal of the folk magic feel to the first film winds up obliterated by the larger stage in this sequel, which is a shame. There’s also the question of whether or not another sequel will be requested and where the films could possibly go from here. After all, ruling the world does seem like an endgame of sorts. (Perhaps part three will have to go intergalactic or ultra-dimensional? I’m not counting on it, but I would genuinely be interested in something like that.)

There’s a lot of silliness between the various heads of houses and their cheering squads. While the film does go over-the-top in these dynamics a little too often, the places where it works provide the film’s best laughs; the similarities between Francesca and her father Ignacio (Néstor Carbonell) are a highlight. Also of particular note is the way the script balances who believes they are in charge of each family group with who is actually in charge, showcasing how power dynamics play out among powerful people. Elijah Wood is having the time of this life as the arbiter of the proceedings—being Satan’s lawyer has to come with some perks, right?

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shawn Hatosy, two veterans of the screen who are well-known and loved amongst ‘90s kids, play the Danforth twins, Ursula and Titus. We run into a bit of an issue in the arcs for both characters, as there are “rules” for scenarios such as these in horror films. This is particularly true for Gellar, who is one of the genre’s most beloved heroes, currently playing a villain. While the usual intrigue is deployed, the heel turns and revelations, the payoff for both of these characters never quite sits right. Hatosy’s brutality is difficult to watch, but it also doesn’t smolder enough at the beginning for the steady build it requires.

Somehow, the film manages to pull it all together at the end. Like its predecessor, Ready or Not: Here I Come does not skimp on outrageousness in its finale, going so much harder on its second run that the emotional catharsis comes clear. The underpinnings of the first story do shine through in enough moments to remind its audience that this isn’t simply a story about the moral bankruptcy of our ruling classes—it is also ultimately a story about how much the institution of marriage demands (and takes) from women.

While Faith may not have existed in the first film, her creation is a helpful reminder to women today that family does not require marriage to sustain itself… but it sure does need sisterhood. All day, every day.[end-mark]

The post Ready or Not: Here I Come Is Ready to Burn it All Down appeared first on Reactor.

https://reactormag.com/movie-review-ready-or-not-here-i-come/

https://reactormag.com/?p=843456

We live on a street where about a quarter of the houses have Muslim families. This morning I watched our neighbours opposite, who moved in fairly recently and we don't know well, pose for photos outside their house all dressed up in smart clothes. Later on our next door neighbour, who we know well enough to have sent an Eid card, was outside with his toddler and wife, chatting with another neighbour, who is white and not religious AFAIK.

The weather is nice enough that I had the windows open - not enough to overhear any conversations but enough to know that there is chatter and happiness around me. It's nice.

ETA: Our next door neighbour just brought round some food and and a really cute little teapot for us!

The birds are singing, the evening light is beautiful, and my salad greens, herb, and cucumber seeds are sprouting in the growhouse. It's a lovely start to the weekend.

Today's Friday open thread prompt is courtesy of a suggestion from [personal profile] lirazel: what are some types of food that only taste good when handmade/made on a small scale (as opposed to the industrial scale supermarket version)?

My immediate response was 'what type of food doesn't taste vastly better when made on a small scale by hand?' but then I thought a bit more, and realised there were quite a lot of foodstuffs where the difference is non-existent (homemade chips where you chop up a potato and roast it in the oven or deep fry it are no more delicious than the fast-food equivalent), or where the effort involved to make it by hand far exceeds any reward in better flavour (condiments in particular: I'm not going to make my own soy sauce, harissa, dijon mustard, etc, you know?).

However, I'd say that beyond the 'too much effort required' category, in my experience most other types of food are better if they're made on a smaller scale. The biggest one for me is baked goods. There is no bread, cake, pie, biscuit, or pastry on Earth in which the mass-produced supermarket (or otherwise industrial-scale) version tastes better than, or even remotely equally good as, the homemade or expensive artisanal bakery version. (I admit to some significant bias here. I worked part-time from the age of 15-23 — the first years of my working life — in artisanal bakeries/patisseries, the first thing I look up in every place I visit is the most highly recommended bakeries/patisseries, and I'm just in general a massive baked goods snob, which is somewhat hilarious in that I'm a very good cook, and comically, catastrophically bad at baking.)

What are your equivalent foodstuffs, if any?

Another routine Friday: drive to the Co-op, visit M for tea and crossword, pop into Eurospar for a couple of things the Co-op don't have and then back home via the by-pass to give the car a bit more of a run. This last item turned out to be a mistake because there were road works just beyond the roundabout where I turn off. I sat in the ever-lengthening queue of traffic for ages as cars streamed past going the other way. I had reached the point of seriously considering whether it would be possible to pull out and drive across the central reservation and go back through town, when our queue started moving again.

I wouldn't actually have done this very strange (and possibly illegal) manoeuvre, but it was tempting. It would have been even more tempting if I still drove a Daihatsu 4x4 which would have bumped over the kerbs and the strip of grass easily. The Skoda Yeti might have been OK too, but as I said, the traffic started moving so I could stop pondering the possibility.

The weather is still unexpectedly nice and yesterday we went for a walk to Fairbourne. We parked at Morfa Mawddach and walked to the coast and all the way along the sea front to the Friog end. It was so warm that I didn't bother with a coat and by the end I'd even taken the sweater off because a short-sleeved t-shirt was fine.

There is a recent craze for leaving piles of balanced stones on or near the beach. The WWII anti-tank defences make excellent plinths for displaying piles of stones and bits of flotsam. Could one describe it as an artwork?

The forecast shows dry sunny weather for the next couple of days, so I need to get on with some outdoor jobs while I have the chance.

Another day of madness in the world, but we have cat memes right here to make us happy.

Whenever the world goes a little crazier than normal - which is quite often lately - we turn to the one thing on the internet that makes us happy. Cats. No matter what is happening, we know for a fact that the cat side of the internet will be as active as ever. There will be cute pictures of cats posted every day, there will be wholesome stories about cats shared at every possible opportunity, and there will be cat memes. There will be so, so many cat memes

In fact, we think that the crazier the world gets, the more hilarious cat memes people post and share. Because we are not the only ones who need these cat memes for our mental health. We are not the only ones who go looking for them, hoping that more and more people will be sharing them. In times of chaos, cat memes are exactly what we need to make it through with our sanity intact. And that is why we, here at ICHC, put together as many of these collections as we can - for our mental well-being and for yours.

I did a gardening. Planted some Self Heal in the shaded spot next to the cat shelter, and dug out some thistles. Now tired.

Do one act of kindness for a cat, and you might be chosen by them forever.

Cats remember kindness. They remember the humans who give them that kindness. We talk about it all the time. Cats domesticated themselves for a reason - they could tell that we, humans, have so much love to give and that we love giving it to them. You could feed a stray cat once, and it will keep coming back for a lifetime. You could let a stray cat sleep in your home one night in a storm, and it might never want to leave again. They know the humans who have their best interests at heart, and when they find humans like this, cats who are ready for a home do not let these humans go.

Of course, usually there is some build-up. Usually, it takes a while, especially for a stray cat, to decide to adopt a human. You might have to feed it a few times or save it from a few cold nights before it decides to stay. And sometimes, apparently, it can be instant. Apparently, some cats respond to your act of kindness immediately - by following you home and never, ever leaving again.

No one likes to be picked last, not even kittens. This kitten, now named 'Pooter', was the last kitten who remained from her litter that was abandoned in front of a pet store. A compassionate hooman saw them on a chance visit to their mom in the Midwest, and after seeing the sorry state Pooter was in, she couldn't resist bringing her home to make her part of the family.

When your first expurrience in life is being abandoned, it's hard to imagine that your life will be anything other than terrible. On top of that, you watch your brothers and sisters find their homes, while you remain alone in the pet store, with nothing but food, water, and a tiny scrap of gray cloth to keep you company. But you have to hold out because one day soon, a hooman will come and see your sadness, and decide that from that day on, you'll never be sad again.

We're happy to say that Pooter is now living her best life with her new pawrent. She enjoys a hearty piece of chimken and sitting on any available empty lap. Her furvorite activities are dinner prep and lounging in front of the fake fireplace. She gets entertainment from her pawrent's fish tank and is showered with love daily.

Pooter may have been the last one picked, but you know what they say, "Good things come to those who wait". And Pooter and her pawrent certainly seem good for each other.

posterI'm pleased to report that late next month I'll be the keynote speaker at the 2026 Southeastern Masonic Symposium in Asheville, North Carolina. While it's being hosted by Freemasons, this event is open to the public and will be livestreamed over the internet. The theme for the event is the important figures in esoteric Masonry, and my talk will be on Gerard Thibault d'Anvers, the brilliant 17th-century martial artist whose book Academie de l'Espee (translated by me as The Academy of the Sword) is the longest and most elaborate treatise on swordsmanship ever written, whose work is pervaded by Masonic and proto-Masonic symbolism, and whose legacy has intriguing connections with a British school of sacred geometry deeply enmeshed in the 18th-century Masonic scene.
