Why does it feel so good to stretch?

To relieve cramped muscles? Muscles only basically tense and untense. And tense = cramps, pain. there might also be a release of pressure on joints?

But pleasure is not the same as an absence of pain.

When you feel tense, you tense your muscles. I suspect that if you stretch, your brain feels a message telling it that you must be feeling relaxed.

nerves, what carry signals, are physical things what are routed through/around/between muscles.

make muscles loose and soft and sleepy = less cross-talking nerves = comfort

That's more what I was hoping for - a physiological-type explanation.

I've Googled a bit, and there's
* exertion causes muscles to get microtears and scar tissue. Stretching reduces adhesions and assists muscle fibres to align.
* stretching improves circulation, of nutrients and oxygen to the muscle cells and of toxins and lactic acid from the cells. When tense, the circulation is squeezed out of the muscle, so it sits around in a little pool of waste products.
* muscles release endorphins when stretched.

I could go with these - the feeling is sufficiently like when you pick a scab (I guess that releases endorphins?) or let the blood rush to your head.
