Chocolate Treacle Fingers

My mother's recipe for Chocolate Treacle Fingers, the yummiest flapjacky biscuit ever in the universe. The treacle really adds something special.

6oz (170g) porridge oats (not the jumbo sort)
6oz (170g) sugar
4oz (110g) dairy free spread (or butter)
2oz (60g) cocoa
1 tablespoon black treacle
few drops of vanilla essence
pinch of salt

Cream fat and sugar
Add remaining ingredients and mix well
Spread and flatten mix into greased shallow baking tray (appx 28x18cm)
Bake at Reg 4 or 180°C for 25 mins
Cut into fingers while still warm

Mum says: I suggest the metric conversions above but haven't tried it! I think that one could probably round-up the butter but round-down the spread (it has a higher water content than butter) otherwise it could get too soggy??

This recipe is published under the Bugshaw Chocolate Tithe Scheme. Anyone may use this recipe to produce Chocolate Treacle Fingers for their personal use, but should tithe 10% of the biscuits to me. I can live in hope...

Hey, maybe I could make some for the Tiptree bake sale at the next WisCon. When do your exams end . . ?

What, I have to come to collect my 10%? ;-)

Hmm. WisCon. In 2009 I am unlikely to be tied to a school calendar :-)

We're having a Last Wacky Wednesday Before The Office Move on International Talk Like A Pirate Day ... with everyone supposed to bring treats for a buffet.

You presumably won't be at the Heffers event this year (Oct 30th), or I could've paid my tithe in person. It's not so far from E'burgh to N'cle, though; you could come down for ghost stories at Xmas, and go home with chocolate goodies...?

PS - dairy free spread? What is this dairy free spread of which you speak? *runs screaming for butter*

If you make it with butter I won't be eating my tithe. It gives me much joint ouchiness :-(

Oh, damn - sorry, forgot that. Oof. This brings us to an impasse. I'll just have to make two lots, I guess: pay multi-tithes, with discount for quantity...

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Or you could let me know when you make some, and how much you make, and I could make a 10%-sized batch for myself :-)

*g* That is such a cool redefinition of a tithe... D'you suppose the govt would accept the same principle, for taxes? "Dear Chancellor, I've made X amount this year, so you need to go out and earn x amount for your share..."

I guess it's similar to the matching funds idea - you raise £x for your charitable project, and I'll match it.

How well do they keep?

I mean, if you hide them from people who would otherwise eat them?

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Jolly well, I should think. Couple of weeks? They are a bit chewy by design so you don't notice if they go soft like old biscuits - and they're quite dense, so don't dry out and go stale like old sponge cake.

They have the parkin nature.
