I suspect it's like buying a really good winter coat or good trousers: you'll have it enough longer that the Vimes Boot Principle comes into play. (This assumes, a safe assumption in your specific case and mine, that the buyer is not so fashion-driven or impulsive as to replace her bed linens every year purely because she wants new colors.) Bed linens may be a better place to apply this than clothes, as beds are less likely than their inhabitants to need new clothes because they gain, lose, or redistribute weight.

Mattress: I'm not fat, I'm just overstuffed! :-)

The value for me in good bed linen is the way it feels so nice it's a pleasure to get into bed, and curl up for a good night's sleep.
