Having got four boxes of clothes etc down from the loft a few days ago, yesterday I sorted them and put them away in cupboards and warbrobes. I ended up spending a thrilling half-hour sorting my coathangers. Argghhh! At least now all my clothes are on hangers, I've selected some good spares, and sorted the rest into heaps. Now, what to do with extraneous hangers? My first plan is to ask at charity shops.

Something else I discovered while doing an audit of bed linen is that after all the separation and going to Edinburgh and coming back again and letting the house out and getting it back again I have:
one (1) duvet
one (1) duvet cover, different size from duvet
nine (9!!!) pillows
no (0) pillowcases
I've been wrapping the poor pillows in old t-shirts, but it's a little embarrassing to be living in such student squalor and I ought to do something about it.

Oh no! Hangers breed when placed in cupboards and -er- closets in the dark! Leave the doors open!!

John Lewis has excellent simple bed clothes at sensible prices. They also usually have good deals on excellent quality seconds. I always save a chunk of my budget to re-stoke there when I have a trip to London.

Seconded. That's where I shop for bed linen.

See Bridget, Even we Estonians know a good deal when we find one.

Thirded! That's where the current linen is from. And that's probably where I'll go, now I know there isn't a box of linen hidden away somewhere and this really is all I have.

Ah yes, mismatched bedlinen. We used to have a superkingsize duvet for our bed and a double for the spare room. Easy to pull the wrong cover out of the cupboard. In the end I just got all the bedding out, chucked the old stuff, kept the new and got new sets of linen as needed. Although you can never have too many pillows.

Pillowcases are astoundingly cheap, you can get value ones at Tesco...

...but that's not the point, is it? More the getting round to it?

I'm always losing hangers!

Thousands of paperclips here, though.

Charity shops always take hangers in my experience.

Second John Lewis for bedding; that's where we always buy ours. Except if you're really short of money, I'd recommend IKEA; their bedding is nothing like as nice, but insanely cheap. Get new bedding that you really love.

You didn't mention fitted sheets; I hope that's not because you don't have any.

I did not deem my fitted sheets worthy of mention, as I found I have them in sufficient but not excessive quantity :-)

It seems an indulgence buying really good bed linen, but it's so nice.

I suspect it's like buying a really good winter coat or good trousers: you'll have it enough longer that the Vimes Boot Principle comes into play. (This assumes, a safe assumption in your specific case and mine, that the buyer is not so fashion-driven or impulsive as to replace her bed linens every year purely because she wants new colors.) Bed linens may be a better place to apply this than clothes, as beds are less likely than their inhabitants to need new clothes because they gain, lose, or redistribute weight.

Mattress: I'm not fat, I'm just overstuffed! :-)

The value for me in good bed linen is the way it feels so nice it's a pleasure to get into bed, and curl up for a good night's sleep.

Our art department really valued the giant sack of wire hangers I brought them after helping [livejournal.com profile] colonel_maxim move. To the point where they've asked wistfully for more.

If you're in East London and you fancy bringing hangers... or you could just find a school nearer you.

I have some pillowcases to spare, if you would like.

Oh I'm fine, thanks. And there are local charity shops who would be delighted to sell me some. I'll wait on getting some nice matched linen.
