In the last couple of weeks I've started to receive emails from sites (Eukanuba, Lands End, Tipitarot) saying "Welcome, realnamehere, thank you for subscribing to our site etc etc"

They look genuine but I haven't subscribed or created an account there. Is this a new sort of spam or just someone who knows my name and email address using it to get free puppy food?

"click here to unsubscribe" Why yes, I think I will.

Well, you've just confirmed that the address exists. So I hope those were real sites, with morals, and not spammers seeing which addresses are valid before spamming.

I'm only talking about trusted sites, whose domain I have checked out before clicking on any emailed link.

Good.

(And yes, you're probably OK, unless some semi-spammer marketting company is running their email campaigns.)

It's just irksome then that someone's using my name and email address to sign up to things then. Next time I get told I've been sent a free sample, I might click on "oh noes - forgot password!" and get one, log in, and find out what mailing address the not-Bridget used.

Now that's an idea.

Not all sites ask for postal address ...

I wonder if there is a site or other mailing-type thing where the 'do NOT send my details to other places' was infinitesimally small?

I guess its a friendship braeker of a thing to do. If its just some garden variety asshole what is there to do? Turn up on their doorstep and embarass them in front of their neighbours. Only recommended if your as good in a fist-fight as Harlan Elison

I delete these without comment. If I hadn't signed up for them in the first place, some spammer's got my name and trying it on.

I strongly suspect Ozy of being the culprit, surfing for gourmet cat treats.

Many years ago, I was feeling facetious, and filled in a series of forms for cat biccie samples, using our cats' names. So samples arrived for Snufkin Brisingamen and so for. Also, in a fit of something or other, I filled in one or two for friends' cats. The potential enormous stupidity of this act had not then dawned upon me, so it was as well that the company in question did not deluge any of us with further mailings. On the other hand, I had the ineffable pleasure of hearing from Andy Sawyer that Billy the cat had received a sample of kitty munchies, and Andy was now trying to figure out how he had managed to fill in the form and send it off. I did confess eventually, but Andy was never quite sure about Billy ... (Billy was a similar vintage to Chia, and I have visions of the two of them sitting in the great cat basket in the sky, deciding what to do with Snufkin).

Removing yourself from those lists clearly shows that you hate cute little puppies and are therefore a very bad person.

I've just had an email from Ukexu, addressed to my LJ account, claiming I've subscribed to their "service" (peddling drugs). Never heard of them; hit the "spam" button.

Those, I delete. These use my full real name and are from respectable companies.
