Doing things fast

1. I tried the one-minute bread [livejournal.com profile] rmc28 posted about a while ago, and it worked pretty well! I am suffering a bit today and reminded of previous joint pain after bread experiences. I might try an experiment where I do the thing with a bowl of hot water and a towel over my head, but it would be warm water and yeast and sugar. Are there any reasons why this is a really stupid idea? I forget my yeast biochemistry.

2. Sometimes your boss asks for something and you say it will take 2-3 weeks. Yesterday she needed something which took 45 seconds. I like being able to turn a job around that quickly.

3. After much faffing I have cancelled my Discworld convention hotel room. I was bracing myself for hoops and long phone conversations, but it took less than 30 seconds to click the reservation web link, enter my details, click "cancel booking" then "Yes". All done!

Now, how to clean the kitchen in less than a minute after making bread and roasting a duck?

Yeast produces CO2, but probably in sufficiently small quantities that you won't asphyxiate. Maybe.

I'll set up some sort of dead man's handle on the teatowel.

[identity profile] pseudomonas.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
You won't asphyxiate on CO2. The body can tell when CO2 levels are too high, and anyway, teatowels are not notoriously airtight.

If I got a rubber teatowel it would be notorious. But not effective as a teatowel. Can you get rubber printed with "A Present From Wales"?

Apply cat.

You might be able to sell your con membership on if you want to as well, it's a shame, I was looking forward to seeing you there.

Same here. I'm sorry you won't be able to make it. But the con is sold out and the membership secretary usually has a waiting list so contacting them may enable you to pass it on.

[identity profile] bellinghman.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Though this close, most of the waiting list have now made other arrangements, so membership may actually be in the position of not being able to recycle it.

On the other hand, Stephen Baxter will now be there, so we can pretend he's a stunt Bug.

Would he hand around chocolate and talk excitedly about spreadsheets? :-)

Well its worth a try, and I am sure I was still fielding enquiries after cancelled tickets at this stage last when when manning the 'info' address.

[identity profile] bellinghman.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh definitely try. That 'may' was a possibility rather than a likelihood.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking that if I went and had to spend the whole weekend lying on my back in my hotel room, I could maybe get points for the Guild of Seamstresses.

Con room

[identity profile] stephdairy.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. Is that your back playing up again? :-(

Not really playing up, but has not demonstrated hoped-for improvements in the months since membership purchase to a point where I feel confident being able to do the travel and still be able to sit in function rooms.

Though today is chuffing ghastly with the bread effects. If all my knuckles hurt I know I've not just done something to my back!

Sounds like a sensible decision, but really one nobody should have to make :-(

Is the bread pain from kneading the bread or allergy to eating it?

The eating was the problem, it was a fabulous no-knead recipe (and if it were the kneading, I fail to see how that could affect my ankles!)

[identity profile] coth.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sympathy for missing the convention (although at least cancellation was painless). Well done with the bread - I might follow that link sometime.

Yay for 45 second success!
Fast cleaning? Fairy power spray.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] tamaranth, may I rename the cat Fairy Power Spray, in the hopes he might clean the kitchen like what Chaz said?

[identity profile] saare-snowqueen.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think if your yeast /water mix is hot enough to make steam it will kill the yeast. Not 100% sure - suggest ask Chaz.

Ahaaaa That's a recipe for ciabatta. I have been wanting to make ciabatta but have been too frazzled to look for a recipe - Thank you.

Thank you!

[identity profile] ladymoonray.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
I might make that bread sometime (and not feed it to you, though, obviously).

It's an excellent recipe for you to experiment with, having so few ingredients. There must be something in there setting off the hurt. I'm not sure snorting yeast mixture is the way to experiment further though!

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a shame. Hope to see you around CBG some time.
