bugshaw: (Broken)

I started noting down where I've eaten out this year, as well as books and gigs and films and stuff. This has the side effect of being a log of how many times they fail to follow through on a proclaimed understanding that I cannot eat gluten or dairy.

So far this year: 15 meals out, -1 creamy risotto, -1 salad with croutons, -1 sorbet on a bed of biscuit crumbs, -1 stealth ingredient (the other three I detected in time to not eat them) = 27% failure rate which is pretty fucking appalling.

I feel bad about making such a fuss every time I eat out, peering suspiciously and double checking everything instead of trusting them to have given me safe food, but with a hit rate like that I'm not going to stop any time soon.

NB Not currently broken from food, despite the userpic, and I have a lovely dairy free Easter egg to look forward to :-)

You can make gluten free meatballs with cornbread as long as it was made with olive or some kind of oil, not butter. I like to use leftover polenta.

At least gluten and dairy are fairly widely recognized as allergens now; my chief sensitivity is to garlic, which chefs out use a bit of in LOTS of dishes :(

And think it's such a small amount of garlic you won't notice the taste, therefore won't complain. Until you get ill.

Okay, I'm no drinker at the moment (especially beer), would you like me to drive? I can do that sort of thing now!

This sucks completely. It would make me very anxious about eating out, and it must take a fair amount of determination to keep on doing it.

T only told me yesterday that M had sent a tub of chocolate mousse which was in the freezer. I shall not need to leave the house to eat for a while!

It demonstrates an ignorance of their product and a disregard for their paying customers which should get them blacklisted whether one has food allergies/sensitivities or not. I wouldn't trust their staff not to have stuck their thumbs in the food; they certainly seem to lack any pride in their work.

Name and shame!

5/17 or 29% now! Happened again at lunch today. I told them my food restrictions, asked after a lamb kebab, was told it would be fine without the flatbread, and it came with a ramekin of suspicious dip which I tasted, asked after, and is made of yoghurt.

Lunch companion suggested I write them a letter. I'm thinking I could write a form letter.

I know someone had a business card made up with "No MSG" on it in several east asian languages. I suspect that size card because it's easy to get some made cheaply in quantity.

Maybe something that says "No dairy. No gluten" "How much?" "Not even a little. Nope. Nada. None."
