[livejournal.com profile] taffbug didn't survive when Worldcon came :(

Sorry about the lack of updates; there was never a computer available when I was passing and I didn't want to queue.

I've seen a surprising number of posts since Worldcon saying exactly that. And that the WiFi was infeasibly expensive.

Someone on the committee was an idiot. They set up the internet lounge in the convention center only, renting the machines from the convention center, rather than use a room in one of the hotels and provide their own machines and/or WiFi access point, and ended up paying convention center business rental rates of $30K for the use of four (or maybe six) computers for the weekend.

I understood that $30K was the cost for turning on the wi-fi in the convention center, and they paid (courtesy of SFSFC and MCFI) something more like $3-5K for the terminal access.

No, you're likelier to be closer to a reliable source on this one than I am. The version I heard was sufficiently many iterations down from source, and at least at one node told in the heat of anger, that it's likely what I heard was garbled. Nevermind.

Worldcon's are pretty clear evidence that fen outclass cats, people have been to more than eight of them and are still alive to talk about it.

And I'm rather glad I didn't miss your visit.
