Someone on the committee was an idiot. They set up the internet lounge in the convention center only, renting the machines from the convention center, rather than use a room in one of the hotels and provide their own machines and/or WiFi access point, and ended up paying convention center business rental rates of $30K for the use of four (or maybe six) computers for the weekend.
I understood that $30K was the cost for turning on the wi-fi in the convention center, and they paid (courtesy of SFSFC and MCFI) something more like $3-5K for the terminal access.
No, you're likelier to be closer to a reliable source on this one than I am. The version I heard was sufficiently many iterations down from source, and at least at one node told in the heat of anger, that it's likely what I heard was garbled. Nevermind.
