Pub and Club

The Carlton Arms was good last night - I'm glad I dragged myself along. The walk home (50 minutes back across town) was good from an exercise point of view, and there were many fewer drunken idiots on the streets, but I still saw many more incidents of public urination, pavements blocked by gaggles, and unnerving snippets of overheard conversation. I'll try another few times, but might end up resorting to the bus.

It was nice to meet so many new people - there were lots of cries of "So you're <username> on LiveJournal!" One chap was [livejournal.com profile] mumblety24; returning home I was taken aback to see how many [livejournal.com profile] mumblety24s there are, is there something special about the number?

Pub was v. cold though, and my back was aching after sitting on the bench seats for a few hours.

Tonight I'm off to B Movie, bringing my friend Naomi WINOLJ. I may see some of you there (possibly even at Cambridge train station!)

But for now, it's back to work.

Oh no, I do like to walk. I try to get in an hour or two a day. Sometimes its just more pleasant than others...

I can't bear not knowing any longer

What's B Movie, and why do you go?

What is B Movie? [livejournal.com profile] bmovie is a goth (and similar music) club night at the Water Rats in London.

So it's somewhere you need to be awake during the hours of darkness, and can't hear the person next you speaking for the music? What an unpleasant idea!

:-)))))

And you get to dress up in a different way from RAF dinner nights (I think that's dress UP as in act UP), and jump around to music, and wear too much eyeliner.

I can see the attraction in the contrast *grin*. Havent done bmovie yet or the calling for that matter. It involves staying up way past my bedtime. Was good to meet you at the Carlton Thursday too.

Walking back from the Carlton.

Is it the centre of town that is disturbing you? I'm not sure of the exact route you are taking but heading to the roundabout near the Grafton centre and then going down Occupation Road, Sturton Street, Kingston Street, and then Devonshire Road to the foot bridge would be bit quieter and not very indirect.

Last night I took Gilbert - Victoria Avenue (which was dodgy) - Burleigh Street - East Road - Mill Road (which was dodgy). Sturton St looks suitable; my map claims I can't get onto Occupation Road from the roundabout but I presume there's pedestrian access.

Or I could stop being a wuss.
Or get the bus.
Or learn to ride my bike better.

I'm getting much less blasé about personal safety than when I was an immortal teenager.

Yes, there's pedestrian access from the roundabout, as you can just about see here.

You can also cut the corner when going from Milton to Chesterton Road, and then take Hamilton Road, and then Montague Road, or Humberstone Road, both of which have pedestrian access to Elizabeth Way.

I think you took about the most zig-zaggy route possible from the Carlton to your place. :-)

It doesn't look too bad on the map; but I took a straight line and made small deviations from the route, trying to approximate it. There might be a shorter route which takes a larger maximum deviation, but I don't know how to calculate that.

Oops, hadn't noticed the Burleigh Street bit, that makes it much better

/me gets out geometry toys.

Oh all right, my alternate route saves you a whole 100m. :-)

Erk. I wish I could lend you one of the tame(ish) Royal Marines assigned to me as escort for if I do need to go anywhere a bit scary...

Lord, Naomi at B-Movie!! I'd have gone if I'd known it was going to be so fannish. Maybe next month. I wonder how many Goths she'll take home :)

Next month it is on at the same time as Novacon, but December maybe? We're also investigating places in Cambridge.
