Licensed to Reverse Parallel Park

Back in July I wrote nervously about my first driving lesson in some years. Today I took my first ever test. And passed! Yay! They gave me an A4 certificate which I didn't want to fold to put in my handbag, so I held it in my lap on the way home. They may have been some cradling, and the occasional stroking but only to appreciate the paper quality. It's jolly nice paper, actually. Shall I bring it round to show you? But mostly I'm pretending to be pragmatic. That said -

Well done!

Yay! Well done :) My driving test was a long time ago, but I remember the feeling very well. I don't think I could walk properly for about a week, the relief went to my knees! My mistake may have been in not celebrating with a jaffa cake, though. That's an excellent plan.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Do join me - I have enough cakes for everyone :-)

[identity profile] ladymoonray.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you :)

That's terrific!

Congratulations! There'll be no stopping you now :)

Oh, jolly well done!

In a year's time you'll be like me: suddenly able to hire a car but completely out of practice :-)

Well done :)

When I passed, the driving instructor took the big L-plate off the roof of the car before getting me to drive us to my house :-)

[identity profile] crazyscot.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting. When I took my test ('95, in Edinburgh), standard practise was for the instructor to drive you home whatever the outcome...

[identity profile] pjamesharvey.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
My instructor drove me home after I passed too, the reasoning being that newly passed drivers would be too excited.

However, that isn't possible when riding a motorbike, so I was happily bouncing along with glee on the ride back to the garage after I passed that test.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
> bouncing along with glee

I was quite calm till I got home, and now I'm wondering WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I PUT RED BULL IN MY DIET COKE. :-)

[identity profile] inulro.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, living on the edge there!

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. Either way, the school notes people often find it hard to concentrate on calm, careful driving. Seeing as the instructor has been doing this way longer than I have, I decided to go along with this plan.

[identity profile] pjamesharvey.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Congratulations!

[identity profile] sphyg.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, that was quick! There's hope for me yet...

[identity profile] beckyc.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, there are DF jaffa cakes! Hooray!

(And congrats, of course :-).)

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
DF jaffa cakes from the Co-op, available in handy 24-packs!

[identity profile] beckyc.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a sensible unit to have.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd prefer 16 or 32-packs. Hmm, one could play draughts with jaffa cakes. Hop hop hop om nom.

[identity profile] fivemack.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you get Evil Jaffa Cakes in peculiar colours to use as the other side's pieces?

I suppose you could lick the chocolate off the smashing orangey bits of sixteen of the pieces, but you'd have to play with very understanding friends.

I saw the cutest hamster in the world yesterday, and it was only eight pounds, but for some reason common sense was made to prevail and my study remains unhamstered.

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Pragmatic Bugshaw was thinking the two sides could place their jaffa cakes face-up and face-down.

Eight pounds? That's a chuffing big hamster. Maybe if you used your common sense for the purposes of jaffa cake draughts there wouldn't be enough left for avoiding hamster purchase.

where is this hamster? i might want to go and see it. i could possibly even drive there

[identity profile] fivemack.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
the very small hamster is in the giant hamster facility garden centre in Horningsea, http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=52.237945,0.185636&spn=0.002598,0.003862&t=h&z=18

at the back of the shop behind the great big enclosure full of guinea-pigs.

it is a roborovski hamster.

It sounded like you would soon when we me met, so very pleased to be proved right! Full manual license, or automatic only?

[identity profile] bugshaw.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Full metal jacket manual, though if I buy a car it will probably be an automatic. My back has started to hurt again with 2x2hr lessons a week in the manual. But now I can drive to the osteopath!

[identity profile] vicarage.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Even better!!

[identity profile] fjm.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!

[identity profile] aardvark179.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent, well done!

So, this trip to Ikea - oh wait, I can't hire a van yet :-)

[identity profile] major-clanger.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well done!

And yes, I ticked the 'now you can take me out to the pub' box... ;-)

[identity profile] 1ngi.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Go you!

Anyway, this cake is great, it's so delicious and moist.

[identity profile] ffutures.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm making a note here:
HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Congrats!

[identity profile] nmg.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Nicely done. I can remember the immense feeling of relief when I passed (on the fifth or possibly the sixth attempt, but after a gap of about fifteen years since the previous test).

Are you planning on doing some post-test motorway lessons?

Yay!

Given that I can't actually hire your driving teacher, did you pick him or the school by some cunning plan I might want to emulate, or something like "closest to my home" or "has an opening on Thursday afternoon"?

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a basic human competence; it's a pernicious blight.

Well done!

Yay!!! Well done.

[identity profile] alexmc.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Three amazing facts about alex's driving test

I passed on my third attempt.
It was on April's fool's day.
It was in the same place that Lewis Hamilton grew up - so maybe we had the same driving exam?

Heartiest of congratulations! Hope to see you up here on Saturday.

I got my Australian license yesterday. They didn't test me for it, just looked at my English one and printed off an Aussie version. Are they sure they want to do that? I mean, really! I don't know anything about driving in Australia.

Big congrats to you on passing your test. :D

Mmm.. jaffa cake.

And well done on the driving test!

Well done - huge relief. Hope you can keep practising.
