If I could change any part of my body, it would be my feet. They are short and wide, I have great trouble finding shoes that approximate fitting. I am disappointed that my new boots, when worn with thick socks, are tight enough over the foot that my toes go numb yet still rub my heels. I should perhaps obtain some bespoke New Rock Socks, that are thin over the toes yet knit up to a nice thick rib around the back of the heel.

I have the same problem - which is why I have become a big fan of Keens. Sadly I have yet to find anyone who sells them over here...

Not your back?

I gave it a lot of thought, and no. I can manage my back problems; I cannot manage my foot problems. I could start to go for bespoke shoes, but I miss the ease of buying something off the shelf.

I have flat feet, which means they are disproportionately large too (but DMs seem to be BALGE), and crap over long distances.

I love DMs, but my last pair took three blood sacrifices and still weren't satisfied :-(

My feet work jolly well, which is why it is so frustrating that shoes cripple them.

I sympathise with you since I too have duck feet (tho' without the handy webs). I'm beginning to think about knitting special socks with thicker yarn down the ankle and around the heel and then thinner over the rest of the foot. I already change stitch around the back of the heel to provide more padding and strength.

I was with you when I got my feet measured. Size four in length and yet I have to wear size 6 or 7s to accommodate the width. Stupid things. Never found a pair of DMs I could cope with, and struggle with just about everything else. Got some nice paratrooper boots - way too long but very comfortable once I wear the right amount of sock (1 long thin sock, plus one fluffy thick one does it, or at a push 1 thick trekking sock per foot). However I am wearing down the heels at a frightening rate, can't get the metal seg things to stay in the rubber to help mitigate this, and can't find anywhere that will sell me another pair now the first place has run out of my size. My feet are RUBBISH. They're also prone to plantar fasciitis, and rolling over outwards, even when wearing flat shoes, causing me hurty ankleness on regular occasions. Stupid feet. I won't even go into the blisters, skin build up and cracked heels...

I assume you've come across Sundaes in Green Street? They have a wide range of comfy shoes for wide feet. You can also get Keens in the UK, but you have to hunt a bit - Karen got some from TK Maxx and last time I looked there were some in the discount shoe shop in Hatfield Galleria.

Even though I am a friend-of-friend dropping by on a specific mission I am compelled to comment! Yargh.

I tried on shoes in Sundaes and they caused me great woe in the toe, so I think my feet may be freakish enough to surpass even them. However - there is a shop called Cavendish Shoes on Cavendish Road off Mill Road that has lots of wide fitting shoes, at least some of which do not look like clown shoes or cost more than I will ever own without selling a kidney, and the man who runs it is very nice too.

I found the same thing; my last three pairs of shoes have come from Cavendish, and I'm due a trip for a new pair. When I first walked in the shop, the man looked at my feet and told me what size I was :-)

Hi, there. I think these are the people who do my shoe repairs, and I can confirm their niceness. The gentleman is ill at the moment, however - I think he has had a heart attack, and they don't know when he'll be back. I still prefer Sundaes for style, however.

Oh dear! Poor chap.

Yes, Sundaes has a much nicer range of styles, but unfortunately they didn't have anything to fit me. I bought a pair anyway because I had No Shoes but I can't wear them without damage :-(

We can Go to Jupiter but I can't find a pair of ready to wear shoes that don't give me 2 weeks minimum of hell. If only i could afford custom made I might beleive in God.

Hullo, I have been Sent. (At least I hope this is the right person!!)

[livejournal.com profile] deborah says you were possibly going to live in our spare room while somebody did scary things to your proper house this week but weren't sure because you have never met me in your life. If the scary house things get too much, please feel free to email me on jhd28 at [that big crumbling university thingy] and we can have tea and stuff so you can decide whether unfamiliar person* is a safe bet for escape from builders or not.

*slightly crazy but not actually mean or at least I try hard

Hi there, thanks for dropping in :-) I don't think we've met but I have seen you comment on mutual Friends' LJs - [livejournal.com profile] simont's?

Yes, I am the Bridget who is beset by builders - and there ought to be an Edward Gorey illustration of that. It would feature draughts, chipboard, and plaster dust. They've taken one window out already; on Monday they move the bed. My friend [livejournal.com profile] rhubarbfool (with whom I was at university in 1989) and his family have offered me their spare room for the couple of days, so I'll stay with them, but many thanks to you and [livejournal.com profile] deborah_c for the offer.

I do like a) tea and b) meeting new people, and it would be nice to meet up some day.
